Moraea macronyx, in Afrikaans known as the veldflap (veld iris), is a stemless perennial, cormous and deciduous, reaching heights from 9 cm to 15 cm.

Three to sometimes five long, hairy leaves are grown, grass-like, channelled and overlapping, without midribs and less than 1 cm wide.

The species distribution is in the Western Cape from the Koue Bokkeveld and the Cederberg through the Little Karoo where the photo was taken to Uniondale and the west of the Langkloof.

The habitat is fynbos and renosterveld on rocky slopes in sandy soil. The species is not considered threatened in habitat early in the twenty first century (Curtis-Scott, et al, 2020; Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; iNaturalist; https://www.pacificbulbsociety.org; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
