When the Monsonia crassicaulis fruit starts developing, it is straight and needle-like, initially green when reaching its full length above the superior ovary. Then turned brown and here blackish near the base as part of ripening, it exceeds the stem spines in length by far.
Individual mericarps will split from the joined schizocarp when the twisting of the awns commence (Van Rooyen and Van Rooyen, 2019; Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Le Roux, et al, 2005; iNaturalist).
