Monsonia herrei is a dwarf succulent shrub that grows semi-erect, spiny branches to heights around 30 cm and spreads to 40 cm in diameter. Its roots are fibrous, not swollen.

Endemic to the Northern Cape, the species distribution is in the east of the Richtersveld between Steinkopf, Eksteenfontein and Vioolsdrif.

The habitat of the plant is quartzite outcrops and slopes. The species is endangered early in the twenty first century due to degradation of its range-restricted habitat from over-grazing and illegal plant collection (Williamson, 2010; Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; iNaturalist; http://llifle.com; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
