Muraltia spinosa at Kagga Kamma

The flowers of Muraltia spinosa are pink or purplish and white. They grow solitary from the upper leaf axils. The flower has five sepals and three petals. Two of the sepals grow longer than the rest and have the same colour as the petals, unlike the other sepals remaining green. These inner two sepals may be up to 8 mm in length.

The lower petal is keeled with a crest at the top, closely aligned with the two lateral petals. The seven stamens have purplish anthers. Flowering happens mainly in winter while some autumn and spring blooms are common (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok 2010; Manning, 2007).
