    The flowers of Pterygodium magnum have interesting purple striped and spotted petals. Pointed bracts are prominent among the flowers.

    P. magnum produces erect flower stems of 1,5m in height, making it the tallest of local ground orchids, as suggested by the specific name.

    The pterygodiums belong to a small genus of southern African orchids, mainly endemic to the Western Cape (www.plantzafrica.com).
