Piaranthus geminatus subsp. geminatus follicle pair

The short, procumbent Piaranthus geminatus subsp. geminatus stem that produced this pair of fruit follicles does not have a good colour, probably from the demands of its recent productive effort.

The spindle-shaped follicles grow in a nearly equal pair, acutely angled from their joint base and widest near the centre. They taper to both ends, more to the tip than the base that is closer to the point of maximum width.

The colouring on the smooth, hairless surfaces is dark purple, blotched pale grey, more so than the other way around (Sloane and White, 1937; Leistner, (Ed.), 2000).
