Prenia pallens stem-tip leaves

The opposite, succulent leaves of Prenia pallens grow in pairs fused together at the base, therefore stalkless or sessile. Only among the flowers are the leaves alternate.

The lance-shaped to linear leaves taper to acutely pointed tips, their margins entire and curving up or folding in, forming channels on the upper surfaces, keeled below. The smooth leaves are covered by a waxy coat easy to rub off.

Many new leaf-pairs are growing from leaf axils in the photo. It was taken in Namaqualand during August after rain (Manning, 2007; Smith, et al, 1998; Manning and Goldblatt, 1996; Herre, 1971; iNaturalist).
