Protea acaulos flowerhead bracts red

This Protea acaulos flowerhead is ageing, although some florets in the centre have not yet freed their styles from the clasp of the perianth segments. The leaves around the head are young and vigorous, some midribs red, others yellow.

P. acaulos flowerheads differ in bract colours. The inner ring of involucral bracts in picture is red on the inside, shallowly concave, some with white along the margins. The head is shallowly bowl-shaped or like a rimmed saucer.

The evenly spread styles are dull yellow and arching in, the short brown pollen presenters at their tips erect or nearly so.

The flowerhead was seen in Jonkershoek during July (Manning, 2007; Rebelo, 1995; Rourke, 1980; iNaturalist).
