The rambossie, common Afrikaans name for Pelargonium papilionaceum, is usually found growing close to streams as was the one in picture. It thrives in the shade of kloofs and along forest fringes. The plant is a suitable garden subject where such conducive conditions can be provided.
The species distribution lies in the southern parts of the Western Cape and Eastern Cape, from Stellenbosch to Grahamstown. This photo was taken near Greyton. The species is not considered threatened in its habitat early in the twenty first century (www.plantzafrica.com; www.redlist.sanbi.org).
