Pelargonium patulum is a sprawling shrublet sometimes reaching 50 cm in height, growing from a thickened tuberous root. The trailing branches are soft and slender.
The distribution of this plant is in the southwestern Cape, from the Cederberg to Paarl and from the Cape Peninsula to Swellendam on the Langeberg. The habitat is sandstone slopes in fynbos, often in shade. This photo was taken in October in Bainskloof. The species is not considered to be threatened in its habitat early in the twenty first century (Manning, 2007; iSpot; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
