Pelargonium leipoldtii is a tuberous or caudiciform perennial growing a leaf tuft and a scape to 20 cm. Tuberous root and caudiciform plants are both represented among the xerophytes, separated as well as linked via a transition or grey area presented by the basal shape.

The leaves in the basal tuft are long-stalked with soft, dull green blades deeply incised into variable, rounded lobes.

The species distribution is in the southwest of the Northern Cape and the northwest of the Western Cape from Komaggas to Clanwilliam and Matjiesfontein.

The habitat is fynbos and succulent Karoo on arid outcrops. The species is not considered to be threatened in its habitat early in the twenty first century (Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; Van Jaarsveld, et al, 2006; iNaturalist; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
