Podalyria calyptrata is often only an erect, branching shrub as seen here, not a tree. It was photographed near a river in the Kogelberg at the beginning of November, when flowering of the species would normally have been continuing for some months.

The shrub in picture is displaying a reasonable crop of ripening fruit pods. The pods are up to 4 cm long. They are hard, hairy and appear inflated. The seeds have fleshy aril attachments, resembling collars (Manning, 2009; Coates Palgrave, 2002; iNaturalist).
