These Psychotria capensis subsp. capensis fruits present different sizes and several shades of red. The darker red ones are riper, the lighter ones closer to the unripe, yellow stage of before.

The holes at the fruit tips may tell of hungry bird visits that took place before the fruits had time to turn fully black. These fruits may, however, be ripe before they turn black, be considered by birds to be ready for eating as they are, or may never to turn black before they wrinkle. Wrinkling has already happened to one of those in picture, not black yet (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Schmidt, et al, 2002; Van Wyk and Van Wyk, 1997; Pooley, 1993; iNaturalist).
