The inflorescences of Psychotria capensis subsp. capensis grow as stem-tip clusters. The youngest buds show their cup-shaped calyx rims in green before the corollas inside them push upwards. This is when they turn yellow and begin to show the five seams up top where the lobes will part at anthesis (flower opening). The buds swell into a club-shape, deeper yellow than the inside surfaces of the open corolla lobes that show themselves later.
The five stamens are only slightly exserted, while the erect style holds the stigma higher (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Schmidt, et al, 2002; Van Wyk and Van Wyk, 1997; Pooley, 1993; iNaturalist).
