Pachycarpus natalensis, commonly the Natal thick-fruit and in Zulu ishongwe elibomvu elikhulu (possible meaning: the big red ishongwe), is a perennial that grows few erect branches, reaching heights around 45 cm. The plant is a resprouter after winter or fire. Plant parts contain a poisonous, milky latex.
The species distribution is in the KwaZulu-Natal Drakensberg and in the north of the Eastern Cape.
The habitat is rocky, mountainous grassland at high altitudes. The habitat population is deemed of least concern early in the twenty first century (Pooley, 1998; iNaturalist; iSpot; http://pza.sanbi.org; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
