Phylica rigidifolia fruit husk after opening

Once the ripe Phylica rigidifolia fruit capsule has dehisced, i.e. burst open to release its seeds, the flaring husk shows its smooth, hollow inside where the seeds rested.

Three rounded, smooth seeds are normally produced, in picture the remains of one that failed is visible. The lateral coverings that once enveloped each seed in the three-segmented fruit are now recurved like the flaps on a Dutch maiden bonnet.

On the outside of the three-part structure, the dark, dry remains of the calyx tube that surrounded the fruit during the early stages still hang on (Le Roux, et al, 2005; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist).
