Phylica lachneaeoides half-open flower

The cylindrical tube of a Phylica lachneaeoides flower is covered in pale, velvety hairs.

The fleshy inner parts of the pointed lobes may only be the inner surfaces of the calyx, or possibly petals. Some Phylica species have five petals, as well as five sepals or calyx lobes outside them. The petals are usually small and sometimes hood-like inside the flower. Some species have no petals at all, the sepals performing all the required functions (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist).
