    The photo confirms that more than half of these Phylica ericoides stem-tips bear flowers on the mature plant in a normal season. The last branching in view happened earlier, now well down from the top. Flowering came after a good year’s stem growth here.

    But this species flowers throughout the year though, so flowers could also sprout shortly after branching, growing together in compounded clusters. 

    Before opening, the buds of these heads started off pointed and dark in colour (Manning, 2007; Bean and Johns, 2005; iNaturalist; https://pza.sanbi.org).
