Pteronia stricta var. stricta flowerheads

The yellow flowerheads of Pteronia stricta var. stricta grow in small clusters at stem-tips. The discoid florets comprising each head have long narrow tubes with small, pointed petal lobes. The flowerhead becomes about 1 cm in diameter with creamy, narrow involucral bracts enveloping its base. The receptacle is not scaled. Anthers and styles are exserted. The pappus has two rows of bristles.

Flowering happens mostly in spring, but may continue or recur at any time through the year, depending on conditions. The photo was taken in September (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2010; iSpot).
