Pteronia staehelinoides flowerhead

The sticky flowerheads of Pteronia staehelinoides have creamy white to pale yellow disc florets. The broad, tapering bracts on the involucre overlap imbricately in several rows around the corolla. The bracts of this specimen have dark brown vertical bands down the centre, pale brown lateral sections and tiny white hairs along their margins.

The flowerhead becomes about 1,5 cm long. Flowering usually happens late in spring and through summer. This one was, however, seen flowering in May near Beaufort West in the Karoo (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2010; iSpot).
