Struthiola tomentosa

Struthiola tomentosa is a slender shrublet growing silky-woolly branches to heights of 60 cm. The plant is hairy as the specific name indicates; tomentose here means that densely matted woolly hairs occur on stems and leaves.

The habitat of this species is rocky sandstone slopes in the Western Province coastal fynbos to the east of False Bay and as far as Swellendam. While the plant would commonly be encountered along the lower slopes, it is occasionally found higher up as well.

Like several other Struthiola species, the plant carries a vernacular name of roemenaggie.

The species is not considered threatened in habitat early in the twenty first century (Manning, 2007; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iSpot; www.redlist.sanbi.org).
