Schizochilus cecilii subsp. transvaalensis is a terrestrial orchid, a slender perennial growing to 25 cm from a root tuber.
The species distribution is in the northeast of South Africa in Limpopo and Mpumalanga as well as in Zimbabwe and Swaziland. The habitat is moist and rocky grassland, at high altitudes. The plants grow in well-drained, often shallow soil over rock. There are two more subspecies of S. cecilii, viz. subsp. culveri and subsp. cecilii (www.africanorchids.dk; www.merlin-trust.org.uk; www.orchidspecies.com).
