Schotia afra, the Karoo boerboon (SA Tree List No. 201), has flowers in late winter and spring with red sepals and petals. The petals may be as long as 2,5 cm. They grow on spur-branchlets or in terminal heads.
One young pod, still growing, can be seen with the flowers. The leaves appear to have been heavily browsed. Fortunately the flowers were formed later, making a reasonable photo possible.
