Schotia afra var. afra pods emerging

These partly eaten flowers of Schotia afra var. afra still display some features of interest. The pointed sepals, even more red than the corolla, have a thicker texture than the petals and make up more than half the flower length. The red stamens protrude above the five petals about as far as the corolla exceeds the calyx. The ageing anthers are mainly lost or spent in the open flowers, while ten young stamens still hide in each unopened bud.

This inflorescence is a dense raceme or spike (Is there a stalk?) at the tip of the branchlet. Buds and flowers are present, as well as some tiny flat green pods. Each pod is still tipped with the red remains of the style, exposed by the loss of the petals (Coates Palgrave, 2002; iSpot).
