The horizontal, green bracts below the calyces of Salvia disermas flowers are clearly displayed in the central whorl in picture. The calyx of a sage flower is much more durable than its corolla, also hairier.

The lower whorl has four open flowers concurrently, a feat not achieved too often (Manning, 2009; Shearing and Van Heerden, 2008; iNaturalist).
