In bud, the flowerheads of Senecio cinerascens are green, as are their peduncles and the spreading bracteoles with up-turned tips in a ring below the heads. This contrasts against the grey of the leaves and stems to be seen lower down.

When maturing as a bud, the top of the head is yellow with a tiny white disc in its centre. The single ring of narrow involucral bracts coheres neatly and tightly around the florets in the bud stage. The involucre of this species may either be hairless and shiny or cobwebby (Le Roux, et al, 2005; Manning, 2009; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist).
