Senecio elegans buds

A couple of Senecio elegans flowerhead buds grow here, stalked on a purple and hairy peduncle.

The bracts form green ridges upon the cylindrical involucres. There is usually one row of involucral bracts on Senecio flowerheads, here two of which the outer one may be the expected small bracteoles. When the purple tips on one of the buds are considered, the bracts may here occur in one more row.

The photo taken at Nature’s Valley in May shows flowering a little early and leaves less incised than the common form of the plant (Manning, 2009; Bean and Johns, 2005; iNaturalist).
