In habitat Satyrium longicauda var. jacottetianum shows its slender flower spike among the grass from spring to autumn. Flowering peaks from midsummer to early autumn. The grassland where it thrives is often stony and marshy, at elevations from near the coast to 3000 m. The plant is also found in some Eastern Cape fynbos and Albany thicket.

Neither variety of Satyrium longicauda seems to be threatened in its habitat early in the twenty first century (Pooley, 1998; iNaturalist; www.africanorchids.dk; www.redlist.sanbi.org).
