Stapelia kwebensis is found in South Africa in parts of Limpopo and North West, notably the Soutpansberg and in Fourieskloof in the Waterberg. There is also a tropical variant found near Lake Ngami in the Okavango Swamp in north-western Botswana.

The stems are four-angled, 15 cm tall and about 1 cm thick. The five-lobed corolla on the flower is about 3 cm in diameter, maroon or chocolate coloured. There are interesting complex but tiny structures of outer and inner coronas in the centre of the flower (White and Sloane, 1937).
