The lightest coloured midrib spines on Solanum linnaeanum leaves may still be softer than the older ones. But take no chances as these spines are all produced for plant defensive purposes and may be ready for action. Some are even retained on the hard leaf midribs from which the soft blades have already disappeared for later eventualities.
The broad-based spines in picture taper fast to their sharp tips, their firm bases reinforced for resisting impact. Midrib spines occur both above and below the leaves (Euston-Brown and Kruger, 2023; Curtis-Scott, et al, 2020; Privett and Lutzeyer, 2010; iNaturalist).
