Solanum africanum, in Afrikaans known as the dronkbessie (drunken berry) or dronktou (drunken string), is a creeping succulent shrub that grows stems up to 3 m long. The association with an intoxicated state probably relates to the rambling nature of the stems, deviating from straight courses. The young stems are square in cross-section; an earlier name for the species was S. quadrangulare.
The plant scrambles in dune thickets over coastal bushes along the South African south and east coasts; lying prostrate where compelled to live without the benefit of shrubby companions (Manning, 2007; iSpot).
