The pale grey stems of Tylecodon cacalioides are cylindrical and erect. The plant (or plants) in picture is in the early stage of branching, the main stem (or stems) already thick.
Flat-tipped, hard and tall phyllopodia, the bases of earlier leaves, are spaced along the stems. The thin, cylindrical leaves growing in stem-tip tufts curve up, grooved on the upper surface. The leaves are soft, succulent and greyish green to glaucous in picture (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2010).
