Tetragonia hirsuta shrublets branch from the base. The lower branches become woody, while the upper ones are thickly fleshy, covered in stiff, spreading hairs. Outer branches spread and curve up, the inner ones erect.
The stem colour is quite variable. In picture they are green, yellow, orange or brown; may sometimes also be red or purplish (Le Roux, et al, 2005; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; JSTOR; iNaturalist).
