The black fruits of this Tetragonia sarcophylla plant have taken on their typical ripe colour. A fruit of this shape is sometimes called a samara. They appear dried out, hanging from thin, long stalks. When these fruits are newly developed after the spring flowering, they are creamy green or reddish, their wings fleshy.
New growth has started on the plant in the form of green leaves among the weathered ones that have lived through the dry and hot summer. The photo was taken near the end of May in the Karoo National Park (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2010; iSpot).
