Early Wahlenbergia thunbergiana bud stages are dark purplish brown and hairy on the outsides of the emerging petals that become paler and shinier as they lengthen.
The flowers grow on sturdy stalks, from leaf axils near stem tips. The stalkless leaves near the flowers are broad-based, narrow and recurve sharply.
The pale green sepals keep adhering to the outside of the corolla although they remain short and become insignificant against the mature corolla that they once covered entirely (Le Roux, et al, 2005; iNaturalist).
