Watsonia coccinea

Watsonia coccinea grows annual sword-shaped leaves and a stalk with sessile red flowers from a perennial underground corm. Flowering occurs in spring in the first few years after veld fires.

These red flowers in the photo are but one of the colour options. They may also be purple or pink. The fruits of this species are large compared to those of some other Watsonia species.

The habitat is damp sandy soil in the extreme southwest of the country (Manning, 2007).
