Watsonia stokoei is a cormous perennial that grows an annual flower stalk to heights between 35 cm and 90 cm; yet another Watsonia that is in Afrikaans commonly known as suurkanol or suurknol (sour bulb).

The plant produces about five annual leaves, sword-shaped with slightly thickened midribs and margins, growing maybe half the length of the inflorescence.

The species is a Western Province endemic found in mountains to the west, including the Cederberg and the Koue Bokkeveld. It grows in mountain fynbos from sandstone derived soil, often in marshes and seeps. The species is not considered to be threatened in its habitat early in the twenty first century (Manning, 2007; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iSpot; www.redlist.sanbi.org).
