Thamnochortus cinereus, commonly called the silver restio and previously scientifically T. argenteus, is a bushy restio growing many stems from a tangled tuft of spreading rhizomes to 1 m in height. The outer stems may sag to give the plant a rounded appearance.
The species distribution is in the coastal south of the country from Malmesbury in the Western Cape to Humansdorp in the Eastern Cape.
It is often found on south-facing mountain slopes where rain and mist are more likely to occur. The habitat population is deemed of least concern early in the twenty first century (Dorrat-Haaksma and Linder, 2012; Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; www.plantzafrica.com; iNaturalist; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
