Old Zygophyllum cordifolium stems become grey and woody. The young ones are still fleshy, here red while sometimes green.
The paired, opposite leaves growing on straight stems are sessile, disc-shaped and ascending with margins that are inconsistently red-rimmed. Leaf diameter varies from 2 cm to 3,5 cm (Manning, 2009; Le Roux, et al, 2005; iNaturalist).
