The opposite, sturdy-stalked leaves of Zygophyllum leptopetalum consist of hardly stalked leaflet pairs.
Leaflet shape is variably elliptic, ovate or obovate with entire margins and rounded, bluntly or obtusely pointed tips, the bases rounded to asymmetrical. Leaf colour is glaucous or blue-green to pale green, the blades succulent and hairless. The midrib is sometimes visible on top in the lower part of the leaflet. Leaflet dimensions are 1,2 cm to 2,8 cm long by 1 cm to 2 cm wide.
The plants, particularly leaves and young growth are palatable to game and stock, causing many plants to appear cropped and not reaching their full height (Mannheimer and Curtis, (Eds.), 2009; Le Roux, et al, 2005; iNaturalist).
