Buddleja loricata

Mountain sagewood or bergsaliehout in Afrikaans, common names of Buddleja loricata, is a small tree or bushy shrub reaching 4 m in height (SA Tree List No. 636.2).

It is popular as a garden subject, particularly due to its good natural shape and its creamy flowerheads that attract birds and insects.

The species distribution is in the Eastern Cape, the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal, as well as Lesotho. The plant is cold resistant, the habitat including rocky patches at high altitude or sheltered places along streambanks. The species is not considered to be threatened in its habitat early in the twenty first century (Coates Palgrave, 2002; www.plantzafrica.com; www.redlist.sanbi.org).
