Brunia fragarioides is by name likened to strawberries, but the rather separated floret buds resemble other berries like raspberries more closely in shape, not in colour.
Once the flowers have opened in the spherical to slightly ellipsoid heads and thin sepals, petals, stamens and styles all compete with the bracts for space, it is easier to recognise Brunia features.
After the plant has been identified, the leaves are recognised as something of a Bruniaceae give-away. The small leaves show little variation in shape and size.
The bush is dense from the profusion of upper stems (Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist; JSTOR).
