Bobartia gladiata subsp. gladiata is one of the rush irises or in Afrikaans blombiesies (flower rushes) of the fynbos. It becomes from 20 cm to 80 cm tall.

The subspecies distribution is in the Western Cape from the Cape Peninsula to Bainskloof in the north where the photo was taken, and eastwards to Hermanus.

The habitat is fynbos mountain slopes and coastal flats. The habitat population of the subspecies is deemed of least concern early in the twenty first century.

Another subspecies, B. gladiata subsp. major has wider, shorter leaves and perianth segments, but bigger flower clusters.  It is endemic to southern parts of the Cape Peninsula. There is a third subspecies, B. gladiata subsp. teres (Bean and Johns, 2005; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist; iSpot; Wikipedia; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
