Barleria obtusa

Barleria obtusa, commonly known as the bush violet, is a scrambling shrublet. It features much in gardens, may be the first member of the genus someone in South Africa gets to know.

The species distribution is large, found over much of the eastern parts of the country, in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and all the provinces north of the Vaal River.

The habitat is grassland, bushveld and rocky ridges. The species is not considered to be threatened in its habitat early in the twenty first century (Van Wyk and Malan, 1997; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
