Barleria elegans flower

The flowers of Barleria elegans are narrowly funnel-shaped, clustered among ovate, spine-toothed bracts and erect calyx lobes with spiny margins.

The five round-tipped, white corolla lobes spread from the flower mouth. They are not quite identical in shape and orientation, the flower not being radially symmetrical (actinomorphic) but laterally symmetrical (zygomorphic). The corolla diameter is about 2 cm, the tube 2 cm long. The slender style and pair of grey- or pale blue-anthered stamens are exserted. Flowering happens in autumn.

A dehiscent, ellipsoid fruit of 1,5 cm in length is produced, cracking open to emit its ripe seed in explosive fashion (Manning, 2009; Pooley, 1998; iNaturalist).
