In this older Brunsvigia radulosa flowerhead the later, upper flowers are peaking for the camera, their earlier counterparts around the bottom ring of the floral hemisphere already busy with the serious labour of fruiting. The lighter perianth colour on young flowers up top tells pollinators where food is more likely to be found, the oldest remaining segments of the lowest flowers being the pinkest.
The green peduncle also seems to take posing for cameras seriously, changing colour on the way up, while doing the twist to music unheard by the photographer.
Down below the large, flat green leaves spread on the ground. Flowers must be fed (Duncan, et al, 2016; Pooley, 1998; iNaturalist; https://pza.sanbi.org).
