Berkheya fruticosa flowerhead

The flowerheads of Berkheya fruticosa grow solitary from stem tips. The yellow disc florets in the centre are narrowly five-lobed, the pointed lobes curving out, spreading around the tall, erect stamens. There is one sparse whorl of channelled yellow ray florets around the disc, each with three tiny pointed tips.

The involucral bracts around the flowerhead base grow in a few whorls. They are free, very spiny and white-woolly. Flowerheads become from 3,5 cm to 5 cm in diameter. Flowering happens from midwinter to midspring (Williamson, 2010; Le Roux, et al, 2005; Manning, 2009; iNaturalist).
