Dioscorea hemicrypta leaves have short, cream petioles. The short branches sometimes carry only one leaf each, giving its leaf a longer stalk with a kink near the blade.

The smooth blue-grey leaf blades fold in along the midribs, the margins entire with curvaceous variations. The angle at which many leaves are borne here ensures that rainwater will run down the central channel, the last drop hanging for a while from the tiny, pointed drip-tip or mucro.
