Closed buds and open flowers on very short pedicels are attached to the axils of pale green, narrow leaves that curve in slightly between base and tip.

The upper stem, young and soft, turns red in about the second or third node from the tip (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; iNaturalist; Wikipedia; ttp://redlist.sanbi.org).
