Disa cooperi is a perennial of the Drakensberg grassland that grows to heights ranging between 40 cm and 70 cm. It occurs from the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Free State, Mpumalanga and Lesotho.
A separate sterile stem bearing only leaves grows annually next to the flower stalk from the tuberous rootstock.
This is one of about 130 Disa species of South Africa, with more than another 30 occurring elsewhere in southern Africa (Manning, 2009).
